March 2, 2009: The BPSOS-Houston Ike team hit the road again last Sunday, this time to meet unmet needs and assess other challenges in the community of San Leon in Texas’ storm-devastated Galveston County.

On the afternoon of Sunday, February 22, the team of staff attorneys Robert Pham and An Phong Vo, case managers Jannette Diep, Nancy Le, and Annie Trinh, along with branch manager Trish Nguyen and videographer Ngoc Huynh, were able to help over 51 families with unmet needs.

“We had another 58 walk-ins we weren’t able to assist due to time constraints,” said Diep. “With the support of the Gulf Coast Ike Relief Fund at the Greater Houston Community Foundation, we’re planning to get to these young families and seniors on our next visit.”

“We’re really grateful to Pastor Bob Gibson, Joe Higgs, and Bernard Scrogin, who set up a meeting at the San Leon Community Church to do intake and address legal questions,” added Diep. “We made appointments in advance with about 80 people, so having that space to meet them in was a huge help.”

Besides the presence at the church, staff members were also able to visit and interview families in their storm-damaged homes. Huynh videotaped the families while they spoke about how their lives had been affected by the landfall of Ike in September 2008, and how much they had lost.

“We encountered a lot of positive responses in San Leon,” said Diep, adding “We’re eager to go back and get working with the people who turned out to get help on Sunday.”

A previous visit took the Ike team to Bridge City, where they distributed gift cards to those in need and rendered other services to over 40 families.
